Goodale, George L. and Isaac Sprague, The Wild Flowers of America, Boston, Bradlee Whidden, 1886, 50 full page chromolithographic prints by Isaac Sprague. Goodale was a prominent New England minister, Isaac Sprague was a noted botanical illustrator who worked with Harvard Professor Asa Gray as an illustrator for all of his writing.

Barton, W.P.C., Flora of North America volumes i-iii, 121 full page hand colored plates. Philadelphia, 1821-1823. 106 engraved hand-colored prints, the first successful use of stippled engraving in the United States. Barton was a surgeon in the US navy, although apparently inactive during his later life.  He was Professor of Botany at the University of Pennsylvania. His Flora of North America is one of the most important of all early American botanical works, the more so for its fine illustrations and scientific descriptions.

Wooster, David, Alpine Plants: Figures and Descriptions of Some of the Most Striking and Beautiful of the Alpine Flowers, 1st & 2d series (1872, 1874), 108 full page chromoxylographic plates (color wood engravings) after drawings by Francis Lydon and printed by Benjamin Fawcett of Driffield (several sets available). Wooster's book is the first significant illustrated work to take note of alpine plants, as such. It marks both the increasing popularity of alpine recreation and of attempts to grow alpine plants in English gardens. Benjamin Fawcett, working with artist Francis (Frank) Lydon, perfected the use of printing with serial hardwood woodblocks for color illustrations, particularly of natural subjects..
